Henrik Ibsen’s brutal portrayal of womanhood caused outrage when it was first performed in 1879. This bold, new version reframes the drama in three different time periods. The fight for women’s suffrage, the Swinging Sixties, and the modern day intertwine in this urgent, poetic play that asks: how far have we really come in the past hundred years?
Director’s notes: Theatre can do anything. You want time-travel, you can find it at the theatre. You want the multiverse, same again. You want female empowerment, again, you know where to look. In fact, right now, you’re in the right place for all three. Ibsen's Nora famously leaves at the end of his play The Doll’s House. In this new version, set in the UK across three time periods, Stef Smith interrogates how far she, and by association, how far we’ve all made it. We start at the same place - three Noras enter their homes in 1918, 1968 and 2018 laden with a Christmas tree. Where they end, might be where we all begin
